That is cosmoline, very common on the V12's, it was all over my 750iL.

Yeah, but if I owned an 850CSi, you'd better believe that I'd have spent hours under the hood with a toothbrush and a bottle of Purple Power and have scrubbed all of that crap off.

I removed the last of the cosmoline on my '87 in that manner, and it wasn't really that hard to get it off.
