Musty odor -ac filter?

I'm getting a musty -old air odor when car windows are open slightly.. funny when the a/c is running odor is diminished.
Not sure if the cabin air filter is responsible or not . Figured it can't hurt to change ..
Where is it located and how to chnge it??
Any other cures for the odor ??

You may have a build up of mold in the cars vents system to my knowledge you can purchace a spray that you put in the car and run the a/c with all the windows up to clear and kill mold in vents.
Your a/c cabin filter could most definitely be the culprit.

I think 2005 is series e46 . will look into filter . I have factory service in october .. the last one that is covered by bmw

Is there a product name for the mold-killer spray?

My AC often gives off a moldy stank as well...

Einszett Klima-Cleaner. I have not used it myself, but I have read reviews online that claim it works. You should remove the cabin filter before doing this and install a new one!
